David Marc from Advance Academy JPMS

Occasionally, or usually once a month our school gets a special guest who either come from Advanced Academy or from another school or salon and he or she comes and talk about  his or her journey of being a hair stylist and offer advice for all of us up and coming hair stylists.

Advanced Academy Team

Today, David Marc came to our school and I have to say  he is one of the best guest speakers we have had for a while. The last one that was pretty awesome was Taryn Aiken, who is also from the Advanced Academy and Jasmine Brock. Maybe the stylists that come from Advanced Academy have more energy and like to have fun more than some of our normal guest speakers! You can check out other Advanced Academy Team Members here.

David with Andrew, a learning leader from RKA

During FREE HUGS EVENT today!
David Marc Campbell is a texture specialist on the Advanced Academy Team and is based out of Tampa Bay, Florida Paul Mitchell Partner School. He started out the presentation with some clips of him at his school and pictures and a cute commercial like movie that had all of us rolling, falling out seats. There was a short movie clip of Denzel Washington in the movie Malcolm X of him geting a relaxer (which he played to show relaxers since he is a texture specialist)

I tried to find a clip on youtube with it, but no luck. Oh well!

He talked about why he joined the beauty industry and how he became part of the Paul Mitchell family as a learning leader/texture specialist down in Tampa.

I dont want to write everything he talked about in his presentation, because I do not want to spoil the experience with other future professionals! He shared with our school and future professionals what it takes to be an AMAZING STYLIST using his own System of how to get clients, how to manage them and to expand on your client book.

He shared his experiences of guests he has or had in the past and many of them were hilarious. His energy was just bouncing off the walls and I could see that he really does have a passion for what he does and that kind of attitude is highly contagious!

He wrapped up his presentation and I was able to talk to him after. I think I have found another person I look up to and gain inspiration from! He held up my doll during his time on stage to demonstrate how much money a hair stylist can make doing color and that ANYTHING is possible.  I had him sign my doll head and of course took a picture! I was so excited about it, can you tell? So Cheesy I am, I know .

David Marc and I with my Patriotic Baby Doll!
So, I have to share somewhat of a funny story (or at least funny to me) with yall. Some of you may or many not know this, but I spent a few years and most of my summers living with my grandparents in Lakeland Florida and I have been wanting to move back . A few years ago,I was accepted to go to a fashion art school down there but just couldnt at that time. Once my mom retires from the Navy, I think we are all ready for a geographic change and I really want to go to Lakeland, or Tampa.

I have it written in my goals list that after I work in a salon for a few years and we do move down to Florida, that I want to be a learning leader for the Tampa school. I was talking to my husband about it last week and then today we have a guest speaker from that school. I dont know if it was a sign or a coincidence (which I dont believe in) but I felt like I was on the right track of getting to where I want to be.

I want to thank David for being a "Daymaker" and inspiring me to be a better professional hairstylist. I had one of those days that confirmed I am supposed to be doing this and I am loving every minute of it! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, advice and humor with all of us at Rudy & Kelly Paul Mitchell of Virginia Beach, VA!

For all my readers, thank you for stopping by, I appreciate everyone who takes the time to read my lil ol' blog!

Behind the Scenes

Here are a few photos from behind the scenes at the Miss Uproar Beauty event  and Uproar Festival

It was so amazing that I was able to be apart of this, especially since it was my birthday. I dont wanna be a "debbie downer" lol about my birthdays but I have had a few birthdays that werent the best. I feel like I can finally celebrate not only my birthday but my life and happiness. I create my own happiness!

My hubby was able to come along too for the ride and he loved it. We all got in for free and got Pit passes and also scored After party passes as well. Only a few people stayed that late to enjoy the party.

I stayed to watch Seether because I knew my mom would be mad if I didnt stay for their performance. lol Jermie and I caught a few guitar picks that they threw out to the crowd to add to our collection of other concert goodies we have started to collect! I will have to give my mom one of the guitar picks just for her!

I didnt stay for the afterparty because I had an appointment with Gentleman Jim from Blue Horseshoe Tattoo to start my collar bone tattoo chest piece!  Stay tuned for the next post on my tattoo!

Here is a video I edited real quick just a glimpse of some of the excitement that went on behind the scenes in the Backstage area. At the end of the video, there is a surprise serenading for my birthday.
I tried to load to youtube, but it wont :( having technical difficulties) So, hopefully I can just load them to here!

I will have to find another way to upload this video, my server is actin up as usual. I will keep you updated on it.

Thanks for stopping by! Please subscribe for updates on more from Sweet Surrender!

Enjoy!

UPROAR Festival

It has been like a week since I have posted- I am sorry all my readers. I have been so busy! I have lots to share!!!! I already gave you an update on the Super Service Day at Rudy and Kelly Paul Mitchell Partner School, but if you missed it, click here.

Wednesday, I found out that I was picked along with 7 other classmates to participate in Miss Uproar Beauty Pageant for the Uproar Festival to do hair and makeup on 8 models that were picked as well. It was such an honor to be picked to do a fun event. I had no idea that I would have so much fun. Rockstar Energy Drinks sponsored the event. At first, I wasnt even going to go to school for my birthday because that is when the concert would be. But I could not pass this opportunity up! What is funny that my husband and I were going to go to this concert anyways. Many bands that we like to listen to were gonna be there such as Avenge Sevenfold, Seether, Three Days Grace, The Art of Dying, Bullet for my Valentine and many more.

I was so excited that I was able to go even though I would be working.  Jermie (my hubby) took the day off for my birthday, so when we got to the Amphitheater on Thursday afternoon, we were able to get my husband in on the action as the "equipment Manager" hahahaha we made him carry all our makeup and hair kits. LOL! We got backstage passes!

Here we are with kits and makeup in tow walking up to the entrance!
They had everything set up for us backstage by all the tour buses. There was a tent, a cooler full of Rockstar energy drinks, two tables, 8 chairs, 5 mirrors and 2 fans that didnt really do anything! We all set up and got to work with half of us doing hair and the other half starting on makeup. It was pretty cool that we didnt plan it that way and we all just worked really good with each other!

We even had Alicia our own photographer there to snap away pictures!

My model, Leslie and I laughin away while I did her makeup. We just couldnt stop laughing!

Everybody hard at work despite the heat of being outside with no wind! We got though it though!
I had two models, Leslie and Sarah and then I painted a snake on Sara (there were 3 Sara's! )
Yours truly with Leslie my first model
My second Model Sara where we did a very pretty rainbow eyeshadow and posing with this yummy Rockstar drink which I usually dont drink energy drinks, but this one was pretty good, I drank like 4 of them!
Here is Sarah who asked that I draw a snake around her neck. I used liquid eyeliner and green and black eyeshadow!
After we finished the hair and makeup, we had an hour to kill while the models walked around showcasing their beauty.  We hung out and saw a few bands play.

We met back with the models and we were able to go onstage while The Art of Dying hosted the Miss Uproar Pageant. It was a lil weird being on stage in from of hundreds of people, but it was not a bad way to celebrate my BIRTHDAY!

Myself and my learning leader Samantha Vain backstage!
The Paul Mitchell Crew: From left to right: Jackie, Myself, Geneva, Devanne, Kim, Crystal, Ms. Debbie, Terry, Brant and Ms. Samantha

I couldnt resist a snapshot of us on stage! hehehehe
Well, I am gonna edit the backstage videos and post that when I am done! I will post more behind the scenes footage soon! I figured this post is large enough!

It's Monday?

Here was my makeup/look for today! NUDE LIP- I LOVES!!!!

I just got done making surprises for my first 5 guests for an event we are doing at school tomorrow! I dont remember if I blogged about it, but Rudy & Kelly Paul Mitchell partner school is having what is called a Super Service Day. They wanted to make the school a more realistic salon setting. Usually we only get one guest per day, but not tomorrow. We get to pretend like we actually work in a salon, where we are double booked and have clients ALL day, which is something that most of us have not experienced yet.

They divided us up into teams based on the colors of our product lines. I am on the GREEN Team(which green is for our SUPER SKINNY LINE). Each of us is in charge of our own schedule and whoever gets at least 5 guests booked will be able to have their own station to set up. I know that doesnt sound that much, but with over 100 students, not all of us can use a station, we end up sharing half the time. LOL.

I booked 6 people, which are all my family or friends that volunteered to help me out. We are having all sorts of competitions tomorrow like who has sold the most product, who has the most guest, and who made the most (if we actually got paid for the service we are performing, because we dont normally-because were still students)

I am excited because I want to feel the salon experience. I know it wont be how some salons are, but it will give me a rough idea. I went and got the decorations to decorate our row for the GREEN TEAM. Party City had all sorts of cool stuff. I got balloons, glowsticks, bubbles, beads, I dont even know what else- if it was GREEN I grabbed it. LOL!

I met up with one of my models to sign some paperwork at Starbucks inside Barnes and Noble-favorite place to chill and get some work done! of course I ordered my drank (cinnamon dulce frapp) YUM!!!! I gave her a lil gift basket I made all my models: (have I ever posted them???) Well, I will post again!

I just picked up lil things that were cool and funky like POP ROCKS, candy ciggs, nail polish, lil puzzle erasers and just things to make someone smile.
I went and looked around for some ideas on dresses to wear for my birthday party coming up. I am gonna write that and post tomorrow! I found some really cute dresses and also some other cool fashion finds!

This is my GROWL face! Grrrrrrr! "SHOW ME YOUR TEETH"

My Vampire Red is starting to fade into The Great Pumpkin color hair. hahaha Remember the great pumpkin from CHarlie Brown?????
I came home and took a few silly snapshots above! hahaha Yes, I am a dork. I know!

I hope you were inspired today to surrender to your inner artist, or inner geek, or inner whatever you are!

Halfway There

fororchestra.com
To complete my cosmetology training at Paul Mitchell, we all need 1500 hours of schooling, then pass the state board. I can happily announce that I am a little over halfway there! I am around 800 hours as of now and passing into the next phase of our school from the Adaptive phase into the creative phase! I am hoping to graduate sometime in December.

February 2011
Time has flown by since I started in January, here I am above showing my curls off. hahaha

Soon, I need to start thinking what I am gonna do when I graduate. I am gonna start looking for an apprentice around October in a salon as a stylist, and then possibly doing a tattoo apprenticeship once I am fulltime in a salon.

I feel like I chave changed my hair a kajillon times......lol but I love it! I love that it is red!

a view from below, not too flattering..but I love the way it looks.

My son said that I must drink alot of blood since my hair turned red. So I told him I was half vampire and he said "I am too mommy!" then I said "I think Bella is a werewolf" and so then she growled!!! She said she was TEAM Jacob.......and me and Matti are TEAM Edward. lol kids are too funny

What Team are you on?

Get Blown

This week in school, were learning the history of perms and blowdryers and I thought it was really interesting the origins of things that we use in our daily life (well, the blowdryers at least).

www.answers.com

This was inspired by the vacuum! Can you believe that? Its so crazy! The things they did back then to be beautiful..and we thought what we do now is painful, imagine back then! hahaha

This picture above shows one of the first electrical perm machine. The hair was wrapped and then clamped and heated by electricity. I saw this quote attached to it and cant help but giggle to myself!

This is what we have been going over, just wanted to share, and hope you get a laugh out of it!

It would be an Honor

Good evening my sweets! I hope everyones day has been good! As for me, today has been really productive, I had alot of energy and I hit the ground running this morning, getting 11 boxes signed off on my worksheet for Rudy & Kelly Paul Mitchell.

I have been really motivated also to try my best to complete the Honors Graduate Packet.  It has a few different categories such as cutting, texture, color and makeup. Each section has a list of things you must complete and you take alot of pictures of "before"  and "after", but I want to graduate from this school with more to show than a certificate. I want Honor's!

In make up class, we learned different eyeliner techniques (which I am thinking about posting a video or blog on) and also how to apply false eyelashes! Here is a picture of some cool things you can do with lashes:

ourvanity.com
I am so excited to practice putting on lashes on myself and on my guests! well, I have a ton of research to do for this photo shoot I am planning along with more videos. I hope all yall have a great night!

Photo Stylist Contest!

Today has been awesome! School was great, starting out with a presentation of a new contest that Paul Mitchell is hosting for students (future professionals).  I got all the details but need to get the packet! Its from May to September and a student can submit 3 photos from a photo shoot displaying artistic skill in hair or makeup. It can follow a theme or be three separate looks. I am super stoked! The winner gets an all expense paid trip to LA to learn more about photo shoots by a celebrity stylist!

Here's a few pics from the winners of last year

I am totally inspired to participate in this, because this is what I want to do! Photo shoots and fashion and have models rockin my looks and visions!

I had a guest in my chair today by the name of Chloe! And she was a breath of fresh air! She has such thick gorgeous curly hair and a bubbly personality, I asked her immediately while lightening her hair from a dark to a beautiful golden brown if she would be interested in being a model for one of my photos for this contest! She said yes! So I am excited to start getting to work!

Lots to do and plan, from story boards, themes, makeup, hair....I could go on and on. But its getting late and need to go to bed when Idol is over :)

Goodnight my sweets! Have a great night or morning!

Time flies when your'e having fun!

I havent been on lately to blog all week! The new semester started last monday and then the next day, Tuesday my classes started at The Rudy & Kelly Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School! I am so in love with this school! The energy and the atmosphere is so amazing, I feel so motivated to go and I feel like I am on the right path towards being successful and making a name for myself. Everyday I learn something new and I meet awesome people everyday. I have a big "kit" filled with combs, blow dryer, straightener, clips in a sleek carrying case. I feel so professional!

Me posing with my doll, I named her Lily....which is my fav flower!!!

Being at two schools is exhausting and trying to balance my schedule and my husbands and of course spending quality time with the kids! Arabella's 7th birthday is coming up and I am planning on baking a topsy turvy cake......and so I will be posting a video on that too!

Sorry this post is short, but I am afraid this is all I can pump out because I am catching another cold :(

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
